Wool Flannel Federal Issue Shirt
Based on an original residing in a private
collection in southern Ohio, this shirt represents just one of the three
different styles of shirts issued to soldiers throughout the Civil War.
Wool flannel shirts were manufactured by contractors from the start to the
end of the war but quartermaster records show that an incredibly high number
of issue shirts purchased by government arsenals and depots were made of gray
cloth. In Cincinnati alone, gray flannel shirts acocunted for over
80% of all issue shirts purcahsed for distribution.
Our reproduction shirt is made from a nicely
finished light mixed gray 100% wool flannel. Each shirt is machine-sewn
with natural cotton thread and features a faced slash pocket, stepped fall-down
collar, faced cuffs, shoulder reinforcement straps, stamped white metal
or Japanned stippled metal buttons, hand-sewn buttonholes, and our maker stamp
on the lower body of the shirt. As per the original, our shirts will
be produced in an issue size that fits up to a size 42" chest and also offered
in the "large" shirt size which will fit up to a 48 chest.
